Grand Rounds Presentation:

Update in Internal Medicine: Obesity

Abstract
Obesity is highly prevalent in the US, and its prevalence is increasing. It is associated with numerous medical and psychological consequences, with a high cost to both the individual and society. While the vast majority of obesity is idiopathic in nature, there is probably a polygenic origin with environmental influence. Development of safe and highly effective anti-obesity drugs will probably depend on identification of specific etiologies or sets of biologic risk factors. Prevention strategies based on identified risk factors may be particularly effective.

Abstract
Obesity is the greatest public health problem of the millennium. Within a few years, it will surpass cigarette smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in this country. Our current model of obesity therapy needs to be completely revised to deal with this growing epidemic. A medically based, multi-disciplinary approach offers the opportunity to begin treating obesity as a disease state rather than a lack of discipline.
